The Caves of Gemina WIP VI by Phoenix-Cry The Caves of Gemina WIP VI by Phoenix-Cry
I can't tell you how many times and how many different ways I worked on that damn patterned jacket.

I wish I could figure out how to bring my painting tech to the 'next level' of detail.  My general style has kind of stagnated and I am trying to find new ways of doing true realism or even something that has more defined brush strokes that don't look odd..but I'm far from anywhere near that.  My work is too smooth, need to find a new brush perhaps.

Here is the stock I've been using as pose ref: phoenix-cry.deviantart.com/art…

wow... this looks amazing :) I love how Rivers face is turning out, and the jacket may be hell, it looks epic.

Not to be nit-picky, but I think River's arm is a little weird. The bulge of her forearm needs to be closer and more connected to the bend in her arm. Look at your reference again and you might be able to see what I'm talking about.

Otherwise, the picture is coming along quite nicely!

Yeah...it does need some work, I'm not happy with the shading on it either.

What kind of brush do you use?  I've been looking for something that gives a nicer 'stroke' look, I may need to hunt down a proper 'grunge brush', I've been working with default and 'wet media' brush so far.

I use GIMP so I don't know if what I use is similar, but I just use the standard round brush with pressure sensitivity. After I color block I use the smudge tool sometimes to give it a more uniform feel (but not all the time). It's good to switch up the size of the brush to give it a more natural feel, especially when painting hair.

I've thought of giving GIMP a try

You know, I just realized it, but it looks like V-   -_- Almost gave it away.... It looks like the Doctor's eyes are pointed above and beyond River... Maybe it's just me...?

I haven't worked on the eye conntact yet.  There won't be a good sense of where he's looking until there are pupils.
