This is a rare mutation of a grey fox that has no guard hairs only his under coat! This is a recessive unstable gene, meaning that a Sampson fox can shed into a normal fox and back again. This mutation was once thought to be a part of cryptology, and often mistaken for a chupacabra.

Lots of work left to do!

can this happen to a red fox too? I have a pelt like this.. with less guardhairs..

Interesting you say the fur is soft like silk. I have a samson red fox and the fur isn't soft in the slightest! It's actually quite rough and feels similar to faux fur.

Anyway, awesome mount!

I wonder if it has to do with how your fox was tanned an all under coat animal should be soft. This guy is like a chinchilla!

Could be. Could also be to do with where he came from. Mine originated from Spain, and European foxes have much coarser fur then North American ones, (more like a coyote then a fox.) It's also an older pelt so that's probably part of it, too.
