As you may or may not know I am currently in North Carolina at the nations largest Gem Show. If you have never been to this Gem Show you can't even begin to understand the scene. Pearls, Rubies, Emeralds, stones, Gold, Silver, Chains, Opals...as far as the eye can see. Tables and tables lined with millions of dollars worth of jewelry, gems, fossils, carvings. Larger than a football field all under one giant enclosed tent with air conditioning.
And what I thought was little to no security.
I was shopping a pearl table (at least 500 pounds of pearls were laid out on this table), I am with two of my best friends, my husband, and my cousin. My mother, father, uncle, and aunt are somewhere else at the show. Suddenly six cops come out of no where.
"Ma'am?" Cops says. "This your party? We need you and your whole party to step outside for a moment?"
"Step outside, please."
As the cops are leading us away I lean to my friend and say "They're kicking us out of here." I say this because this is actually a show for jewelers, it is not open to the public. My Mum and I get in using our businesses tax ID numbers (she exports building supplies, and I train dogs) and say the others work for us. Once outside the cops go to unlock this shed type structure.
"Did you lock someone we know in there?" I ask half seriously.
"No, Ma'am. Please step inside."
Here is something I don't want to do, and at first I won't.
"We just want to talk."
Dude, I thought cops only said shit like that in the movies. All of my 'party' are already inside so I decide not to leave them alone. Once again I ask what they want.
"One of the dealers believes you have been stealing."
"Oooooooooooh..." I say as I actually understand. "Is that all."
This 'is that all' makes the cops instantly realize that they don't have criminals on their hands. We still had to prove our purchases, and I had actually bought everything in cash and had no reciepts to prove them. So I had to take one of the cops back to each of the six places I had purchased from.
Every place remembered me: "Oh yes! We are family!" Said the one dealer, mainly because my mother had purchased 5,000$ worth of rubies from him the day before. "Hey, Tattoo, you back for more?" Said another (I had my cherry blossom tattoos hanging out of my sleeve, which is what makes my mother think they picked us up).
By this time the cop realizes that he is not only wasting his time, but mine as well and has possibly pissed off a valuable customer. So at the cop started making small talk, and it is at this point that I notice he has K9 officer on his uniform.
So we start talking dogs.
"You want to meet my dog?" Cop asks.
Beautiful all black Belgium Malinos. Such a wonderful dog and he just loved me. So I spent like half an hour with the cop dog and I was telling the officer where he could get a really nice K9 cop collar for him. Giggle.
All in all they let us back into the show...which is when we started our crime spree.
