Egypt Burning II
“Jabari, please!” Shai’nefer pleaded with the Arabian. “We must go to the City of the Dead!”
Jabari stubbornly pull stubbornly on the reins to face in the direction of Abydos. He squealed in protest as Shai’nefer roughly forced him back around.
“Running away isn’t going to save us, or Egypt.” Shai’nefer argued. “I must speak with Anubis, he will listen to me!”
Jabari gave in and took off in the direction that Shai’nefer wanted to go. The sand kicked up a cloud beneath Jabari’s hooves as he flew across the desert. Once again Shai’nefer was astonished by the Arabian’s speed.
The clouds parted away from the full Moon just as it reached its zenith, and the desert became flooded in a bath of pale silver light. However it was a different glow that caused Jabari to slam his hooves into the sand and slide to a stop. He tried to turn around, but Shai’nefer had too tight a hold of his reins and forced him to stay.
A pack of wraith thin Jackals calmly stood in their path. The blood red Alpha and her midnight blue Beta sat at the head of the pack. Around the necks many of the Jackals were necklaces that each held a single brightly glowing stone. Shai’nefer had never seen anything like them before.
“Rehema, what is happening?” Shai’nefer asked the Alpha. “Where is your Master? Where is Anubis?”
Rehema bowed her head as a single tear slipped down her sharp muzzle. Shai’nefer gasped in shock when the Jackal looked back up at her. Rehema’s eyes were glowing bright red and had narrowed to slits of fury. Shai’nefer didn’t understand, the Jackals were her friends.
“Kill the male, leave the female to me!” Rehema demanded of the others.
Jabari ripped the reins out of Shai’nefer’s hands and whipped around. Bolting into a dead run he fled the Jackals’ pursuit. It was only at this moment that Shai’nefer came to realize that Jabari was no ordinary beast. His speed was far above any mortal animal, even the regal cheetah could not have captured him. However the Jackals were not mortals, and they were gaining on them.
The Jackals of Anubis were not fooled by the Arabian’s beautiful form, they knew who Jabari was. He was Amon the Hidden One, a full blooded Child of Egypt. Horus had long ago agreed to keep Amon’s secret when he decided that he wished to live a simpler life than that of living God. Much older then Shai’nefer Amon recognized the necklaces that the Jackals wore as Ka Crystals, the captured souls of slain Gods and Goddesses.
Shai’nefer screamed as one of the Jackals bit down on her cloak and ripped her off Amon’s back. Amon stopped so quickly that he lost his balance and crashed to the ground. He struggled to his feet only to see Rehema standing over Shai’nefer’s broken body.
“Shai!” Amon cried his first spoken word in over a thousand years.
While he was distracted the other had surrounded him. Amon cried in anguish as the Jackals dragged him to the desert sand. He kicked his powerful hooves at Anubis’s slaves. However the Jackals were far too numerous to be defeated. Rehema walked up to him with her deep red fur drenched in bright red blood. Around her neck was a new Crystal that glimmer bright green.
“Why are you doing this?!” Amon demanded.
“I have my orders.” Rehema said sadly. “I can not disobey.”
